Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs Birthday Cake

When I was asked to make a cake based on the movie 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2' I was thrilled, I love this movie and it's a great theme for a cake. The only stipulation was there had to be a model of Flint the main character.
The cake is chocolate with chocolate butter cream and shaped to look like a burger (or a carousel like my dad thought it was). After dirty icing I covered the top and round the base of the cake with teddy bear brown fondant and round the centre I used chocolate brown fondant for the meat. To decorate the burger I used green fondant for the lettuce, red fondant for tomatoes and yellow fondant for cheese making one of the segments look like a tongue. To create the eyes I made two larger sesame seeds with black dots to make them look sinister and then covered the rest of the bun top with smaller yellow fondant seeds. To make the legs I used straws that I cut to size then rolled out yellow fondant placed some glue down one side then rolled it around the straw bending it into shape straight away so it didn't crack, also left a bit of straw bear so that it would sit in the cake securely and look like chips for legs.
The marshmallows are marshmallows with little faces drawn on and the gherkins are made of green fondant and red fondant for the eyes. The last character was the strawberry on top I had to put it on as it super cute, I made it with red and green fondant.

Christening Cupcakes

These cupcakes were for the christening of little Georgie. The cupcakes are lemon sponge with pink lemon butter cream and decorated with bees, rainbows and rubber ducks which were all made without moulds. The bees I used an oval cutter and edible black ink pen to create the lines. The rainbows are strips of colour with white fondant rounds for the clouds. The ducks are 3 balls of yellow fondant, a large ball for the body with a point for the tale, a medium ball for the head and a small piece for the beak. The other cupcakes have caterpillars, butterflies and flowers making it very girlie.

Movie Cupcakes

For the movie based cupcakes I was given a colour palette of red, gold and black to work with. I love movies so it was simple to come up with 4 different designs to make. First I thought about awards -the Oscars and BAFTA's. Next is the film clapper board and finally film reels ( a bit old school but I am a bit old school).
Both the awards are made free hand as I don't have any moulds that look like either awards so they all look a little bit different, then I dusted them with gold luster to make them twinkle.
For the clapper board I used a rectangle cutter and sliced a section out the top to create the clapper then glued white fondant over that section.
The film reel is two circles that have cut outs which I used the broderie cutter so they matched when stuck either side of a black disk of fondant that is the film.
The cupcakes are chocolate with chocolate butter cream and red fondant stars to make the toppers stand out more.

Designer Handbags and Shoes Cupcakes

I recently made a dozen cupcakes with designer handbags and logos for a friend to give as a birthday present and they went down a storm so she ordered another dozen with a few changes for a different friend. On this set she wanted two pairs of Louboutin's, one shoe stood up and the other on its side so you can see the red heel. At first I was trying to make a 3D pair of shoes but it wasn't working and then I remembered about the Westwood cake where I did the patchwork shoes. So I found a picture on  the Internet that had one stood up and one on its side, cut each section out and created a patchwork which would sit on top of the butter cream.
The next change was two Westwood logos to go with the Chanel and Louis Vuitton and six original handbags.
The cupcakes were lemon sponge with pink lemon butter cream.

Lego Movie Birthday Cake

For this cake I was asked to create a cake around the Lego Movie. To start I made the two main movie characters Emmet and Batman, trying to keep them looking like Lego figures with the yellow faces and U shaped hands.
The next step was creating the Lego blocks. I bought a cake pop mould that made large Lego blocks which meant I could cut them into 6 pin, 4 pin and 2 pin blocks.
The cake is vanilla with jam, vanilla butter cream and covered in Lincoln  green fondant. Originally I was going to use a Lego impressing mat to make the green fondant look like Lego lawn but the mat was too small to cover a whole cake without looking messy so I kept the mat for the cake board and decorated the top with the bricks, two figures and the birthday message.

Seaside Birthday Cake

I made the seaside cake for a lovely lady who wasn't going to have a cake for her birthday but her family and friends said she couldn't have a party with out a cake and I second that :-)
After talking with her for a while I realised that she may not have any hobbies like gardening or knitting but she loves the seaside and goes regularly which is what inspired this cake. We starting talking about the seaside and I thought whenever you go to the seaside it is traditional even for us big kids to make a sandcastle and it would look cool on top of the square Victoria sponge plus little Georgie (I think that's her niece) prefers chocolate cake over vanilla so the sandcastle was for her mainly.
I started of by making a 10" Victoria sponge and a chocolate tray bake for the sandcastle. The main cake is covered in light yellow and baby blue fondant, I would normally take the top of the cake for a smooth finish but the delve that happened during baking because the parchment paper stuck to the cake and not the tin looked like a sand dune so it was a happy accident, I like them. To join the 2 colours I used the vanilla butter cream to create waves and sea foam and then decorated the sea floor with shells.
For the sandcastle I had the chocolate tray bake that I cut 2 rounds out one larger than the other and sat them on top of each other. After eventually dirty icing the sandcastle and 5 small marshmallow I covered it in a mixture of ginger nut and rich tea biscuits that I blended to create a sand texture, this also went over part of the main cake.
To finish the cake I made a little seagull and a bucket and spade out of fondant.

Designer Handbag Cupcakes

I was asked to make some cupcakes for a friend who wanted tiny Chanel and Louis Vuitton handbags and logos on a dozen cupcakes. I started of by finding pictures of three handbags from each designer and made them ahead of schedule so they had time to harden and keep their shape making sure the handles would stand up when placed on top. The cupcakes are chocolate with a purple vanilla butter cream and lots of glitter and the logos.

Garden Plant Pot Birthday Cake

This cake was originally set to be like another cake I had done previously with 4 garden scenes around the cake and a flower spray on top but I'm not a huge fan of doing the same cake twice and a couple of days before the cake was due to be finished I had this idea of a white picket fence covered in flowers (which I know I've done before) but the top would have 2 plant pots filled with flowers. Thankfully the lady organising the cake knows I wont let a cake go out the house unless I was happy with it so she said to go with it as long as its garden themed she trusted me :-)
The main cake is a Victoria sponge with raspberry jam and vanilla butter cream and covered in my favourite Lincoln green fondant. The plant pots are 2 chocolate cakes that I made in mini pudding tins, I made a couple spare in case they didn't come out of the tins whole which 2 of them didn't grr. After cutting the tops of I dirty iced the cakes and covered them in teddy brown fondant with a second strip around the top edge, the tops I iced with chocolate butter cream and decorated with purple and blue flowers.
The fence was cut free hand so none of the lengths were exact and the points differed slightly. For the flowers I did a variety to make it look more like a garden.
